Local schools from the All Aboard Youth Rowing regions in the North West will compete once again on the River Mersey at Warrington Rowing Club for the 2024 AAYR Schools Regatta.
Participants are 12 to 13-year-olds (Year 8) from 32 schools across the North West. Over the past academic year, they have been part of the All Aboard Youth Rowing programme, attending rowing sessions for two hours each week during term time. Many of these youngsters would not have had the chance to row without this programme.
The regatta marks the culmination of their year, offering them the opportunity to represent their schools and showcase the skills they have developed since September.
The event is divided into four 90-minute sessions, with eight schools competing in each group.
Format:
-
Each group competes in two side-by-side races against other schools.
-
The course, approximately 300 meters long, is a shortened version of the Warrington Rowing Club summer regatta course.
-
Each crew races once, then turns around to race again.
-
Races are timed, and the fastest time is used to establish a league for the day. (The second time is used in the event of a tie-break.)
-
The crew with the fastest time in each category (girls and open) at the end of the day will be crowned champions. There will also be regional winners.
-
Crews consist of four rowers and a cox, in stable boats.
Session Times:
-
Session 1: 09:00 - 10:30
-
Session 2: 10:45 - 12:15
-
Session 3: 12:30 - 14:00
-
Session 4: 14:15 - 15:45
